Planning a New Project: Summer Cardigan in Royal Blue

Few things feel more exciting than picking out yarn for a new project — especially when the colors and textures just click.

Right now, I’m preparing to cast on the Novice Cardigan – Mohair Edition by PetiteKnit. It’s a simple, timeless cardigan that I’ve been eyeing for a while, and this summer feels like the perfect time to finally make it. I’m planning on wearing this with a blue summer dress. I live in Norway, and trust me, the summer nights up in north can be quite chilly!

My yarn choice + U.S substitute

The yarns:

  • Sandnes Garn Tynn Silk Mohair:
A delicate blend of mohair and silk that adds a light, fluffy texture and gentle sheen.
  • Sandnes Garn Alpakka Følgetråd: A non-elastic alpaca companion thread that brings softness and structure without weight.

The two strands held together give the perfect balance: light and floaty from the mohair, with just enough weight and softness from the alpaca. It’s going to drape beautifully — at least that’s the plan!

I’ll admit — I was a bit unsure about using mohair for this project. It’s not usually my favorite fiber to work with; I often find it a bit sticky and tricky to handle, especially if I need to unravel. But I really wanted that soft, airy texture for this cardigan, so I decided to give it another shot.
I’ll share some feedback once I’ve knitted a bit and can say more about how it feels to work with this combo — maybe it’ll surprise me in a good way

American substitutes

If you live in America (U.S or Canada..), or you just want a yarn brand in English, here are some other yarns you can use:

These yarns aren’t identical, but they offer a similar gauge, fiber blend, and texture. Always swatch before starting a new project with substitutions

Most of these are easy to find in local yarn stores or online. The key is to combine a mohair/silk blend with a laceweight alpaca or soft merino thread for a similar feel and gauge.

Let me know if you try a different combo, or any other yarn suggestions!

and yes, a very curious cat who had to inspect the skeins!

The pattern

The pattern is available in English at petiteknit.com, and is beginner-friendly with clear instructions and helpful diagrams and videos. I use this website a lot when looking for inspiration, this is my third project from them!

This is how the finished product should look like. Can’t wait to see it in blue!
